------------------------------
Coming up on Sunday, December 6th
[image: H2HHD icon] This week the *Poets' Asylum* will hold our regular open
mic followed by a *Head-to-Head Haiku Death Match*. Competitors should bring
at least 30 haiku to participate. A descendant and sub-genre of poetry slam,
a Haiku Death Match is a competitive head-to-head poetry duel. The Haiku
Death Match has been a prominent "sideshow" feature at the annual National
Poetry Slam since in the mid 1990s.
Haiku is a traditional form of Japanese poetry consisting of 17 syllables in
three metrical phrases of five syllables, seven syllables, five syllables.
Haiku in English usually appear in three lines, to parallel the three
metrical phrases of Japanese haiku. Slam haiku used in a Haiku Death Match
is far simpler - just 17 syllables.
Come on down to Jumpin' Juice and Java (335 Chandler Street, Worcester). The
reading starts around 6:00 p.m. No cover; please put some money in the
bucket to support reading.
November 29th Revisited
Thanks to everyone who came out Sunday night for the Thanksgiving weekend
edition of the Poets' Asylum. Following the open mic we held an *Open Slam*.
Four poets participated - Max, Aisha, Danielle and Nick. Following two
rounds, and a killer time penalty, Nick won the slam and took home the $10
cash prize.
