Rebecca Henderson began her career as a poet at the age of seven by winning the WBZ Bullfrog Jumping/Poetry Contest. In 1990 she joined the Worcester Poetry Asylum, where she was exposed to slam poetry. In 1999, Rebecca won a spot on the Providence Slam Team, which competed at the 10th Annual National Poetry Slam Championships in Chicago. The year 2000 marked Rebecca's return to the Worcester Slam Team to compete at the National Competition for a 2nd year.
In 2001 Rebecca embarked on her first poetry tour, which took her throughout the Southeast cities, including Birmingham AL, Americus GA, Knoxville TN, Athens, GA and many more. She was a featured reader at the Southern Fried Regional Competition in Americus GA.
Rebecca has performed at Lollapalooza, City Stages Festival, The Blithwold Mansion Benefit, Hear in Rhode Island Festival, Sober in the Sun Festival, Voices in the Dark, Worcester State College, WPI, MIT, Becker College, Rhode Island College, the Spoken Word, First Night Worcester, WICN radio, and other venues throughout New England.
Her publishing credits include Omnivore Magazine, The Arizona Anthology, Crone's Nest, The Anthology of Spoken Word Poets, and Check the Oil Magazine. She has published four chapbooks and the latest is titled Love Life Ailing. Rebecca is listed in the Who's Who of Poetry and published electronically at www.nycpoetry.com.
Rebecca is a founding member of the Worcester Poetry Asylum. She edited the annual Poet's Asylum anthology in 2002 and 2003. She also acts as the Asylum travel agent, squeezing pennies out of airfare, hotel rooms and the like when we sent a team to Nationals.
She is also the Volunteer Coordinator of Public Relations for Slam Sisters, a national organization dedicated to promoting women in the art of poetry and spoken word. Rebecca recently took over hosting the Moonstruck Cafe poetry reading and has transformed it into Speak Easy every Saturday night in Charlton, MA.
Ms. Henderson is a recent graduate of Worcester State College and plans on pursuing her Master's Degree in Education. She currently resides in beautiful Maine.
